Because we write a blog about the distric’s food scene, we’re often asked to name our favorite DC restaurants. Almost every time this happens, we stammer over our answer and go through a list of around 20 restaurants we love. It’s just so hard to choose!
To help make that moment less of a rambling diatribe, we’ve decided to round-up our three favorite restaurants from each month. Both Tom and I weighed in with our favorites, and for fun we’ve included a list of restaurants we’re most interested in checking out in May. Let’s get started!
Bad Sentences’ Three Favorite DC Restaurants in April
1. Little Coco’s
We’ve been obsessed with Little Coco’s ever since our first visit. We love the adorable patio, and the service we have received each time we’ve visited has been not only friendly and helpful, but super fun as well. Of course, the food is stellar as well. They also just added a killer afternoon happy hour, with deeply discounted drinks, small plates and pizzas. I seriously can’t say enough good things about Little Coco’s and I have a feeling that they’ll stay one of our favorite restaurants for years to come. – Kacy
2. Ruta del Vino
We’ve mentioned before how Ruta del Vino is our favorite neighborhood spot and our affection has only continued to grow. We’ve since been back a few times to try more items on the menu and check out their new outdoor patio right on Upshur. Along with great happy hour specials, the South American-themed wine list is both unique and a great value. Our current go-to’s at Ruta are the cactus salad and fish tacos, but the smoked octopus was also a big hit with our group upon our last visit and has me eager to try more of the menu in the coming weeks. – Tom
My ladies day brunch at Hazel was such a highlight of the month. It was actually a pretty close tie between Hazel and Tiger Fork for the third slot, but because I was able to try so many dishes for such a good price at Hazel I had to put them on top. There are so many bites from that meal – the duck muffin and zucchini bread especially – that I’ve craved over and over again throughout the month. It’s no coincidence that all three of these restaurants have awesome patios, and Hazel’s may just be my favorite of the three. – Kacy
DC Restaurants We’re Most Excited to Try in May
1. Federalist Pig
I love anything grilled, smoked, or barbecued and am always on the hunt for great bbq joints in the District. However, we consistently have been disappointed with DC’s bbq offerings when compared to what we’ve had in our travels (see: Franklin BBQ and Hard Eight). Maybe I’m being too harsh to expect Texas-style goodness in the barbecue, but I still think that the area could use a few more quality options. I’ve only heard great things so far about Federalist Pig and many Instagram posts have me drooling over their brisket and rib platters. – Tom
I feel like Cleveland Park often gets overlooked compared to other neighborhoods in the city. We actually live a reasonable walk from the area now, and I’ve been dying to try Bindaas for ages now, so hopefully this is the month to finally make it happen. I love Indian food, but am not as familiar with the street food offerings served at Bindaas. I can’t wait for a delicious education on chaat, kathi rolls and pao. – Kacy
3. Hazel (for dinner)
I’ve been curious about Hazel for months now and seeing the pictures and post from Kacy on the Dim Sunday brunch has only added fuel to the fire. My original interest has been with their dinner offerings and I think I can convince Kacy to join me for a date night there with little persuasion. The gnocchi with pork-kimchi ragu and sticky crunchy ribs sound like mandatory orders, while the soft shell crab stack from their “Lazy Susan Dinners” would be perfect if we go with a small group. – Tom
Okay, okay we’re also pretty excited to check out the Whaley’s Rosé Garden as well as Taqueria del Barrio in our neighborhood, but we’re trying to keep things on a level over here. We’ll check back in next month to let you know if we were able to check these places off our list, and name our favorite DC restaurants from May as well (there are always a few surprises we don’t see coming). Have a great weekend everyone!
