While it still feels like summer in DC, it’s the last week of September. How did that happen? We had a wonderful weekend up in New Jersey celebrating a beautiful family wedding. This week is going to be super-charged with work and events before we leave for an epic road trip to Oklahoma City. I’m excited to see lots of new places and spend time with my family in Oklahoma.

#UncensoredDC Underground Cocktail Party
Hopefully you’ve been hunting for banned books in the district throughout September. The month-long celebration is coming to a close on Saturday at 7 p.m. with the UNCENSORED Underground Cocktail Party. The event is presented by the DC Public Library Foundation and event chairs Jennifer Barger, Derek Brown, DC Brau, Dupont Underground, Svetlana Legetic, Paul Ruppert and Morgan H. West.
UNCENSORED Underground is DC Public Library Foundation’s annual Banned Books Week fundraiser celebrating the freedom to read, create and express.
The evening will feature:
- Banned book-themed cocktails created by D.C.’s best local bartenders
- Live musical performances by Cheick Hamala Diabate and JoGo Project
- Provocative art by Robin Bell and Dana Jeri Maier
- Maker crafts led by DC Public Library librarians
- Pop-up market with local retailers
- And so much more
Ayrshire Farm Hosts Fall Harvest Tour
Ayrshire Farm is hosting a Fall Harvest Tour designed to showcase their locally produced, humanely raised heritage breed animals including turkeys, cattle, pigs and chickens in their natural habitat. On Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests can enjoy guided tractor tours every 30 minutes and family activities, including face painting and food concessions. Ayrshire Farm’s Fall Harvest Tour will be hosted rain or shine. Dress appropriately for the outdoors. The event is free and guests are encouraged to RSVP.
Havana Nights at Blackwall Hitch
Blackwall Hitch in Alexandria is hosting its first annual Havana Nights party on Thursday, September 28th from 8 -11 p.m. In partnership with Steve & Lara Swing dance company and Cape Fear Cigar Experience, the event will feature a Latin dance demonstration, dance lessons and an interactive “Cigar 101” experience. Guests will enjoy live music, Latin-inspired cocktails and delicacies from both the restaurant’s waterfront patio and loft space, The Crow’s Nest. Come dressed in your finest Havana fashions, taste a Blackwall Hitch cigar and enjoy the evening’s festivities.
Tickets may be pre-purchased for $65 by calling 703-739-6090 or at the door for $75. A ticket includes three drinks and all you can eat food.
Barre to Bar at Kapnos
On Saturday, head to Kapnos Taverna in Ballston for a special barre to bar experience. Barre is a full body, all levels work out. Choreographed to music the class will leave your muscles feeling toned, stretched, and lifted. Chauna Bryant will educate you while getting a great workout. Afterwards, you can enjoy Kapnos Taverna’s all-you-can-eat brunch downstairs. I’ve worked out with Chauna before and can guarantee you will have fun and feel the burn! Attendees should bring their own mat, towel, and water. Tickets are $40.
DC Reynold’s Whole Pig Roast
DC Reynolds is celebrating 2,000 consecutive days open with a pig roast on Saturday at 4 p.m. A $30 ticket includes all you can eat and your first drink. Treat yourself to Absolut Vodka and Black Hog Brew specials all night, as well as DC Reynolds’ legendary BOGO happy hour, starting an hour earlier. In the case of rain, the party will be pushed back a day to Sunday, October 1st.
