Summer continues to slip through our fingers, but I’m not letting it go without a fight. We had a nice weekend catching up with good friends and finally checking out The Hive at The National Building Museum. If you haven’t been yet, definitely be sure to check it out! Some Assembly Required Interactive Butchering Class
Gather at Mess Hall on to watch Mike Haney, from the Salt Line (formerly of Birch & Barley and All Purpose) break down a heritage pig, sourced from local Spring House Farm. During the interactive three-hour event, Mike will cover many butchering techniques and skills while you indulge in local craft beers and BBQ. Participants can don gloves and participate to an extent but cannot wield the blades. Joe Neuman, pitmaster and founder of Sloppy Mama’s Barbeque will provide a dinner of smoked pork and hand-made sausages, plus sides. Tickets start at $55, with additional VIP options that include prime cuts of meat to take home.
Literary Cocktails at Petworth Citizen’s Reading Room
Reading Room DC at Petworth Citizen is celebrating the upcoming Solar Eclipse by pondering what would happen if we had no moon at all. Bartender Chantal Tseng is reading Seveneves, the science fiction thriller from Neal Stephenson. The Reading Room will feature a limited-run drinks menu created by Chantal just for this weekend, inspired by the book. The special cocktails are available Friday, August 18th and Saturday, August 19th from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Capital Chili Cookoff & DMV Beer Fest
Head to The Bull Pen on Saturday, August 19th to see DC’s best chili chefs compete to represent DC at the World Chili Cookoff in Reno, Nevada. In addition to endless chili samples, ticket holders can enjoy unlimited beer pours from breweries around the DMV. A general admission ticket goes for $45. VIP tickets are available for $65 and include early admission at 2pm, access to a private roof deck and more.
