Hi guys and welcome to September! I hope everyone in the U.S. had a great Labor Day weekend. This month is going to be crazy and fun with lots of travel and the return of college football. Let’s dive into this short week with our list of best bets around town.
#UncensoredDC Banned Books Week
Today marks the start of school for many across the country, but for here in DC it’s also the start of DC Public Library Foundation’s #UncensoredDC Scavenger Hunt! During the month of September, 600 banned books will be hidden in over 50 locations throughout the city. With the theme of “Texts Against Tyranny,” the six novels being hidden are: Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid’s Tale, Parable of the Sower, The Giver, We, and Who Fears Death. Each book is wrapped in a special cover featuring quotes from the book. If you find all six, you can line them up for a special image.
To participate: find a hidden book, take a photo of it with #UncensoredDC, and you’ll be entered to win prizes. If you find one of the 15 “golden ticket” books and share it on social media, you’ll automatically win a pair of tickets to UNCENSORED Underground: The Cocktail Party on 9/30, the DCPLF’s annual fundraiser and celebration of Banned Books Week. A daily clue will be shared on WAMU Morning Edition and also online and on social media.
Taste of Oregon at Roofer’s Union
Get ready for the wildest wine tasting in town at Zoo Uncorked on September 7th at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Enjoy wine tastings from local and national wineries and vineyards in the beautiful setting of the Zoo. Dance to live music, meet exotic animals and, new this year, stroll through The Art of Conservation, an exhibition and sale of handcrafted goods from independent area artists.
Tickets are $70 and include unlimited wine tastings and a commemorative glass. This is an adult-only event.
