There’s a new rooftop bar in town that you probably haven’t heard of yet. Top of the Yard opened last month in the newly constructed Hampton Inn in Navy Yard, and it’s got some of the best, if not the best, views you’ll find in DC.
We stopped by with Tom’s parents on Mother’s Day and had the place almost entirely to ourselves, which is next to unheard of in the district.
Tom and I had spent the day before bar hopping with friends at several other DC rooftops, all of which were crowded as all get out with views that paled in comparison. Bustling rooftops can definitely be fun, but sometimes you just want some peace and quiet and something pretty to look at.
Although I’ve known about Top of the Yard for a few weeks, I kept forgetting to check it out. I honestly didn’t think it would be that great, being a hotel bar and all, but my expectations were blown out of the water. In fact, I almost hesitate to write about it because I’d love to keep this little haven all to myself.
I imagine it will get pretty crowded on Nats game nights, since the view looks right onto Nats Park. I’m pretty sure you can’t get that anywhere else in Navy Yard.
The space is relatively small, but offers comfortable seating overlooking the Anacostia. They have well-priced wines by the glass, a few beers on tap along with a list of fun DC and Nats themed cocktails. The service was great as well. Bar food is available if you’re hungry, but a better bet might be to eat before or after if you want something that isn’t fried.
From what we were told, dogs are allowed on the rooftop as well, so I can imagine we’ll be spending a lot of family time at Top of the Yard this summer. But shhh, this is our little secret.
